More About Washington
Washington was named after the first president of the United States, George Washington, and was officially admitted to the Union in 1889. Though it is officially known as “The State of Washington”, the state is more commonly referred to as “Washington State”. This is largely due to the state sharing its namesake with the capital of the United States: Washington, D.C. Interestingly, the state of Washington is the only state in the Union that was named after a president. Another nickname for the state of Washington is the “Evergreen State”, coined in the 1890s by a pioneer for the lush evergreen forests present in the area.
The state of Washington is located in the Pacific Northwestern region of the United States of America. Washington lies above the state of Oregon and is bordered to on its eastern side by the state of Idaho. Washington further shares a border with Canada to its north and the Pacific Ocean on its western side. In terms of land mass, the state of Washington is the 18th most extensive in the Union. Washington is additionally the 13th most populated state and over 60% of the entire population of the state resides in its largest city, Seattle.
