This course provides insights on how to successfully organize Engineering Departments. Several factors that are critical in organizing the Engineering Department are introduced: the type of work performed by the Engineering Department, the type of processes experienced by the projects, the team members’ skills and interests, the relationship between the Engineering Department and the other departments in the same company and with outside companies, etc. The reader will learn how to use this information to make the Engineering Department successful while keeping the employees professionally satisfied.
Furthermore, the course presents the distinctive features of a few types of Engineering Departments (single-disciplinary departments, multi-disciplinary departments, departments with multiple geographical locations) as well as the organization principles of projects-based departments, discipline-based departments and matrix departments.
This course is useful for engineers that already have solid knowledge of product design, may have had exposure with some organizational aspects of the Engineering Department and would like to acquire additional organizational skills that help them advance their career into Engineering Management. At the same time the course helps new Engineering Managers navigate thru their new work challenges. A few short examples are given that illustrate the main points.
