Overview
Credit: 3 PDH
Length: 33 pages
The Median Design course was developed to provide the basic median design standards for the traffic and roadway engineer. Florida Administrative Code (FAC) Rule 14-97 speaks to the spacing standards for median openings. These spacing requirements can be found in the Controlled Access Facility Classification table.
In this course, the different types of median openings are discussed in relation to the conflict points created by the turning vehicles. The flexibility of the spacings in design is discussed. The relationship between access and thru traffic movement is shown to give the engineer an understanding of the importance of maintaining the specified spacings.
Roadway design elements such as taper length, design speed and sight distance are discussed in relation to median openings. Median design elements such as end treatments, opening length and left/right turn lanes are also included. Special conditions such as freeway ramp terminals, u-turn considerations and driveway connection design at the median openings are also discussed.
The course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of median design from which a person can use this information in traffic studies and roadway design.
