Overview

Length: 78 pages
Foundation design is required for all structures to ensure that the loads imposed on the underlying soil will not cause shear failures or damaging settlements. The two major types of foundations used for structures can be categorized as "shallow" and "deep" foundations. This course first discusses a general approach to foundation design and then concentrates on the topic of shallow foundations. It explains the basic theories, engineering evaluations, and practical approaches to the safe, cost-effective design and construction of geotechnical features of shallow foundations.
The course's content traces the geotechnical aspects of a project from preparation of the boring request through design computation of settlement, allowable footing pressure, etc., to the construction of approach embankments and foundations. It also presents recommendations for how to layout borings efficiently, how to minimize approach embankment settlement, how to design the most cost-effective pier and abutment foundations, and how to transmit design information properly so that the project can be constructed efficiently.
This course is applicable to geotechnical, civil, mining, structural, and environmental engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning, design, and construction of shallow foundations.
