- How lessons drawn from this tragedy apply to the fundamental canon of ethics for engineers
Overview
On January 28th, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from launch pad LC-39B at Kennedy Space Center. 73 seconds later, the shuttle completely disintegrated. All was lost, including its seven crew members.
This terrible and historic tragedy was wrought neither by any individual nor by design defect alone. It was the result of complex social and political pressures on a collision course with Mother Nature and one ill-fated connection between rocket booster segments. Could this tragedy have been averted by using stricter ethical guidelines in the decisions that were made?
In this webinar, we will examine and discuss in detail the events, decisions, and other contributing factors that led up to this terrible accident. We will also deduce the lessons learned from such a complex case study so that we may all be better prepared to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
