"Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties." - ASCE Code of Ethics
In this course, you'll learn why ethics is the cornerstone of strong leadership. You'll see various examples of historical figures that abused their power and displayed a grievous lack of ethics. The ASCE Code of Ethics will be briefly reviewed as it relates to making design decisions that balance cost effectiveness with public safety and building standards.
Case studies contrasting ethical and unethical decisions will be covered, with examples from the military, higher education, medicine, and politics. Several engineering disasters will be briefly discussed to illustrate the potential consequences of unethical behavior. The ethics continuum and personal ethics model will be used to illustrate recommendations on how best to act ethically in all facets of your professional life.
This is a video recording of a live seminar held April 5, 2013 as a part of the 2013 Tulane Engineering Forum, and is offered exclusively by PDHengineer by special arrangement with the engineering alumni of Tulane University and the Tulane School of Science and Engineering. This valuable information is presented by Jack Grubbs, PhD, PE, motivational and leadership speaker, and author of GrubbsStuff.
