Course description
The "Electrical Switching Safety for Operators" course is a crucial one-day training designed to educate personnel who interact with electrical equipment as part of their daily duties, especially in terms of turning on and off, or locking out machines for maintenance. This course addresses the requirements set by the CSA Z462-24 standard, part of the sweeping new electrical safety measures introduced across Canada to enhance the protection of employees working on, around, or near electrically energized equipment.
Participants will gain:
- An enhanced understanding of electrical circuit operation and the potential risks associated with electrical energy.
- The ability to recognize and respond appropriately to electrical hazards, with an emphasis on arc flash and shock prevention.
- Skills in safely and confidently operating a range of electrical switching equipment, following standard operating procedures and lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices.
Who should attend?
- Operators
- Maintenance Personnel
- Safety Managers
- Anyone involved in electrical switching operations
Training content
Course Highlights:
- Basic Electricity Review: A comprehensive refresher on electrical circuits and systems, covering both normal and abnormal operation, alongside a pre-test to assess current understanding and a review of current legislation impacting electrical safety practices.
- Arc Flash Safety: A detailed exploration of electrical hazards such as electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast. This module emphasizes the importance of protection through understanding the effects of time, current, and distance, as well as the correct use of shock protection and flash protection gear, including gloves and tools. It also covers approach boundaries and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Electrical Switching Equipment: Identification and operation of various types of switchgear based on voltage and purpose, including their potential hazards and the procedures for safe operation. This includes practical lab projects allowing participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, covering equipment ranging from low-voltage setups (120/208, 120/240 volt equipment) to medium and potentially high-voltage systems (480/600 volt, 5,000/4,160 volt, and 15,000/13,800 volt equipment, if applicable).
Certification / Credits
Upon completion, participants will be certified under CSA Z462-24, equipped with the knowledge to recognize and mitigate electrical hazards, and understand the essentials of arc flash safety and shock prevention. This course aims to instill confidence in safely operating various electrical switching equipment, from basic switches and motor controls to more complex high-voltage switchgear.
