Course description

Hudson Valley Leadership Program

Battlefield Leadership offers a variety of onsite programs, all of which showcase vivid and profoundly impressive leadership lessons from history. Our battlefield-based leadership training sessions vary from one to four days in length and use great battles from military history as intensive case studies as a basis for examining and learning about contemporary business leadership practices.

Programs are conducted on location, on the actual terrain of the historic battles, and feature lodging and meeting venues which are as period-authentic as possible.

Through a combination of historical case studies and workshop discussions, participants of this company-specific course with Battlefield Leadership will be inspired to hone their abilities to think clearly, act decisively, and lead with determination, even during periods of ambiguity.

Participants of this leadership program with Battlefield Leadership will explore key terrain throughout the area and examine the locations assessed by Gen. George Washington and his staff in an attempt to re-establish or gain control of vital defensive positions. Highly interactive case studies will examine principal figures of the Colonial offensives in the greater Hudson River Valley area.

Selected leadership competencies for the Hudson Valley Leadership Program are:

  • Focus on the critical versus the important
  • Maintaining the initiative
  • Aligning the team behind a shared vision
  • Cascading intent through an organization
  • Working across organizational boundaries

Training content

Based in a period of great uncertainty, infused with a powerful vision for the future of a nation free from the oppression of foreign dominance and rule, the events that occurred in the Hudson Valley of New York from October 1777 through October 1780 had a profound and strategically important effect on the morale of the struggling Continental Army and its control of key defensive positions along the Hudson River.

The obvious importance of the Hudson River to the colonies as the main transportation artery for supplies, as well as its natural positioning as an invasion route from Canada, made the need for the establishment, recapture, and strengthening of defenses along its length a paramount strategic objective for the Continentals.
