About
ASTM International: Helping Our World Work Better
ASTM International was originally founded in 1898 as the "American Society for Testing and Materials". Today, ASTM International is a not-for-profit organization and is one of the largest voluntary standards developing organizations globally. The organization provides a forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services.
Members of ASTM develop technical documents that are used as a base for manufacturing, management, procurement, codes, and regulations. These members represent users, producers, consumers, government, and academic professionals from over 150 countries worldwide and belong to standards-writing committees. Each of these various standards-writing committees focuses on a certain area, such as steel, petroleum, medical devices, property management, consumer products and several more. These are the committees that develop more than 12,000 ASTM Standards found in the 80-volume book of ASTM Standards that is published annually.
