What is ITSM Training?

If you use any kind of technology in your business, whether it’s just one laptop, or a suite of sophisticated apps to go with it, chances are IT Service Management (ITSM) could be a real game changer for you. ITSM is not only about resolving minor day to day issues; it can bring many benefits to your company overall as you optimize processes, reduce risks, cut costs and save time.

ITIL is the most popular ITSM framework. It is split across five areas of what is known as the Service Lifestyle. These are Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement.

In most introductory ITIL training courses, you would probably cover the following objectives:

  • Introduction to Service Management
  • The Service Lifestyle
  • Generic Concepts and Definitions
  • Key Principles and Models
  • Phases and Processes

Another popular framework is COBIT. In a COBIT course you might cover:

  • Key Challenges of using IT
  • IT governance concepts and benefits
  • COBIT® 5 framework, principles, and enablers
  • Relationship  between stakeholder needs and governance
  • Governance and management domains

Certification Exam

Some courses also provide a certification at the end of them. The ITIL® 2011 Foundation (Certificate), for example, is an excellent stepping stone for those seeking a change in the management of IT services throughout their organization. This is a certification generally sought out by IT professionals who work with the support, operation, management, and development of application-based and infrastructure-based IT services. It is also a prerequisite for other advanced ITIL certifications.

For more experienced delegates, there are more advanced courses and certification such as the ITIL® Practitioner which builds on ITSM fundamentals to broaden knowledge and expand basic skills, and the ITIL Expert certification in ITSM which is a prerequisite for progress towards the ITIL Master in ITSM.

Who is ITSM Training for?

ITSM training is aimed at various professionals, from executives and key stakeholders, through to project managers and IT consultants. Prerequisites vary for each course. However, in most cases it is expected that delegates have at least basic IT literacy and around two years of IT experience. Check carefully with providers before applying.
