Incinerators for destruction of solid waste are a difficult class of incinerators to design and operate, primarily because of the nature of the waste material. Solid waste can vary widely in composition and physical characteristics, making the effects of feed rates and parameters of destruction very difficult to predict. Solid waste incinerators most often burn wastes over a range of low and high heat values, i.e., from wet garbage with an as-received heat value below 2,500 Btu/lb (1,390 kc/kg), to plastic wastes, over 19,000 Btu/lb (10,500 kc/kg). Materials handling, firing, and residue removal equipment are more critical, cumbersome, expensive, and difficult to control with solid waste incinerators than with other types of incinerators.
This course covers small on-site solid waste incinerators. These are used for waste disposal located on-site where these wastes are generated. This would include a business, a factory, a school, an apartment complex, etc. They are generally factory built, normally "off the shelf" equipment. The use of on-site incineration precludes the need for waste transportation, and the costs associated with such trucking and other hauling procedures.
